The Domestic Violence Coordinating Council was founded in 1996 as the direct result of a 1995 status report released by the Women’s Fund of Greater Omaha Task Force on Domestic Violence.  The report entitled, “Can We Stop the Violence in Omaha?” included the analysis of:

  • The extent of domestic violence in Omaha, NE
  • Impact of domestic violence on children
  • Possible sources of the area’s problem
  • Current response to battered women and their children

Greater Omaha responded by creating a comprehensive domestic violence prevention strategy that included the formation of a 50-member multidisciplinary community council to achieve the following goals:

  • Facilitate the cooperation and coordination between agencies, departments, and the court system dealing with domestic violence
  • Promote effective prevention, intervention, and treatment techniques for individuals and entities working with domestic violence victims and offenders
  • Raise awareness and improve the community’s response to domestic violence
