Rick Shaneyfelt
Giving with a higher purpose.

Rick ShaneyfeltIn high school and college, Rick Shaneyfelt was able to devote an incredible amount of time to religious and spiritual pursuits.

After college – after getting a full-time job, getting married and, having four children – Shaneyfelt's ministry was no less important to him. He just didn't have the same amount of time to offer.

So he found another to way to give.

Since a friend from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes first told him about the tax benefits of using the Omaha Community Foundation 10 years ago, Shaneyfelt has been giving through the Foundation to the Christian charities he cares about.

He opened a Charitable Checkbook account with one lump-sum deposit, and he directs the Foundation to disperse the money to various religious organizations when the need arises.

Through his involvement with Lincoln Berean Church, Shaneyfelt developed a vast network of friends, many of whom are missionaries. He has supported Christian missions to Taiwan, Macedonia, and South America, among others.

"The best thing about having the (Charitable Checkbook) account is that it allows you the time to sensibly think about who you want to give your money to," he said. "You can write one check to the Omaha Community Foundation, and then give money throughout the year as things come up."

Shaneyfelt sees the Omaha Community Foundation as a perfect vehicle for religious giving.

"Many Christians give 10 to 20 percent of their income on a monthly or yearly basis. I think the benefits the Foundation offers, in terms of flexibility and timing, are tremendous. It's been excellent for me."
